Snow is the number-one worry I hear from Canadians thinking about solar. "Larry, doesn't the snow just kill it?" It's a fair question, and the answer has more nuance than either the salespeople or the doomsayers will tell you. After 25 winters watching our own panels, here's the real story.
What actually happens when snow lands
A light dusting isn't much of a problem. Sunlight still filters through, the dark panel surface warms up, and the snow slides off. A solid, opaque cover is a different story — it blocks the light and production drops to nearly nothing until it clears. So the question isn't really "does snow hurt production," it's "how long does the snow stay on," and that you can control.
Tilt does the heavy lifting
A steep panel sheds snow. A flat one holds it. This is the single biggest thing under your control, and it's why I push people toward a steeper winter tilt angle — it aims the panels at the low winter sun and lets gravity clear the snow within a day or two of any sun. A top-of-pole mount that you can crank steeper for winter is the gold standard here; the snow barely gets a chance to sit.
The annual loss is smaller than you'd guess
Here's the number that surprises people: over a whole winter, a well-tilted array in Canada typically gives up only a few percent of its annual production to snow. The panels spend far more time clear than covered, and the biggest production months are summer anyway. Flat or badly-tilted panels lose a lot more, because the snow just parks there. Tilt it right and snow is a footnote, not a dealbreaker.
Clearing snow: only if it's safe
Should you brush the panels off? If they're on a steep, reachable ground or pole mount, a soft-bristled roof rake on a mild day is fine and speeds things up. If they're up on an icy roof, leave them — no amount of winter production is worth a fall. Let the tilt and the sun handle it. The hidden winter bonus
One thing nobody mentions: fresh snow on the ground is bright, and it reflects light back up onto the panels. On a clear, cold day, that reflection — albedo, if you want the term — gives you a little extra. It's part of why a crisp winter afternoon can produce better than you'd expect. Cold, clear, and snowy isn't the enemy people think it is.
