BATTERIES
The battery bank is considered the heart of the off grid system, your solar energy is stored for use at a later time. SURRETTE/ROLLS is the Cadillac of lead acid solar batteries and are often seen in larger cooler climate off grid solar installations. The smaller solar power systems often use DEKA absorbed glass mat batteries. The DEKA battery is ideal for remote location, where they charge slower and vent less hydrogen.

Before purchasing any solar component, always check for CSA rating. A wind power turbine can be a great adjunct to a solar power system. In the prairie provinces wind is viable in southern Alberta. Although there will be pockets of useable wind else where, you should become familiar with the exact energy the historic winds produce in your area.
