A backup generator in an off grid solar power system, allows you to have power throughout those long winter nights, or those cloudy summer days. A fully automated generator, requires only fuel, and regular maintenance. Giving you steady reliable power, while your neighbours are relying on the utility companies. Selecting a generator can be a daunting task. The most reliable, by far are the slower speed (1800 rpm) units using either diesel, or propane. Living off grid with a reliable working generator brings completeness to your solar system.
When sizing a generator for an off grid system the general rule of thumb is 2 times your inverter power, if your inverter is 4000 watts (4KW) then the smallest generator you should select is 8000 watts. This allows the generator to handle any loads the inverter is supplying plus additional to handle the built in battery charger. A smaller generator will cause brown outs when switching higher loads. If you select too large of a diesel generator then you will not get peak performance, life, and fuel economy as diesels are designed to be ran hot, for at least 50% of the time. Propane generators can be sized a bit larger, however propane fuel can become an issue at temperatures below -30 C. Propane and gasoline generators suffer from carburetor icing at colder temperatures, these generators if ran at higher than 1800 rpm have shortened lifetime, and should only be used as standby.
